Our history

Il Giglio was founded in the late 1800s as a post station, where travelers refreshed themselves and horses rested after the steep climb leading to Montalcino. In those years the Brunello di Montalcino was born, and it is likely due to this renowned wine that Il Giglio also began to grow.
In the early 1900s, Il Giglio became a Hotel–Restaurant, the only one in the area, and as early as 1912 it was awarded at the United Exhibitions of Viareggio as one of the best hotels in Tuscany.
From that time on, Il Giglio remained a central point of reference in the life of this town near Siena: in its Sala dei Fattori the most important business dealings took place and the wealthy of the time gathered. Sooner or later, the hotel was visited by all the key figures of 20th-century Montalcino, amid wars and weddings.
Between past and present
In the early 1990s, perhaps due to its uniqueness, Il Giglio went through a period of highs and lows. It was precisely then that the Machetti family stepped in to restore its former dignity through a complete renovation.
Today, the furnishings and materials (wrought iron, solid wood, travertine stone), used to build Il Giglio a century ago, blend seamlessly with modern comforts and technology.
We bring the passion, managing this hotel like a 'great home', while Montalcino provides the scenery... the rest is up to you.
