In medieval times, the end of the hunting season and the return of hunters from the countryside with plenty of game was a times for feasts and banquets where nobles and common people all joined together in duels and jousts to demonstrate their prowess.
Since 1957 the town of Montalcino has commemorated its medieval origins by celebrating the Sagra del Tordo, an ancient ceremony in which the four quarters 'Quartieri' of the town, called Borghetto, Pianello, Ruga and Travaglio, challenge each other in an archery contest. Between drum rolls and the scent of grilled game being roasted in the Fortress, it is easy to be transported back to medieval times.
